Jackée Guillou
Winner of the 2009 CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award from the 2009 TD Canada Trust International Jazz Festival, Guillou is best known for her vintage sound that embraces a dynamic range, powerful voice and sensual style. Cousin of Canadian country music star, Lisa Brokop, Guillou has worked alongside many Canadian greats such as Rick Mercer, John Mann, Ted Dykstra and Marek Norman. Her strong sense of rhythmic phrasing, colorful tone and distinct articulation bring a fresh sound to traditional jazz. Her deep roots in music come from experience in old style musical theatre, with a 10 year history of performing musicals with Canada’s most successful professional theatre companies.
Guillou creates a classy swinging sound, playing a range of jazz standards from traditional to original tunes that are reminiscent of Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan and Jane Monheit. Her influences are deeply rooted in the 20s 30s and 40s and range from the ever-soulful Aretha Franklin, Dinah Washington and Brazilian legend Elis Regina. She has studied many percussive instruments and languages in diverse countries such as India, France, Argentina and Brazil and thus performs in English, French, Spanish and Portugese.
This sophisticated lady endures a stage presence that is absolutely charming and infectious, warranting the poise of a developed vocal artist in her prime. She has completed 2 live albums Live @ The Rotary Centre For The Arts and Live @ The Firehall Centre For The Arts and a debut studio album entitled Por Ejemplo. Guillou is a member of SAC, CAEA, MUSIC BC and SOCAN and is based in Vancouver, BC.
