Flamingo Wallpaper in the Kitchen

August 17, 2020

One thing we’ve achieved a lot of during lockdown and now this inbetween stage of life where it isn’t completely normal yet, is home renovations. We’ve busily been ticking off little odds and ends to rooms that we’ve wanted to do for a while but never gotten around to actually doing.

We’ve also done some decorating that we didn’t really anticipate. After updating the nursery – which I will blog about soon but it’s not quite ready for sharing yet – with this flamingo wallpaper I knew I needed it in another space in the house.

Originally being in just the nursery, whilst lovely for that room, meant we really wouldn’t be seeing much of it. And I fell in love so much that we decided to update the kitchen.

This is our third kitchen update in the five years that we’ve lived in our house, although this was a very minor adjustment to the room, though it has had a major impact on the look of the room. You can see some of our previous kitchen updates when we updated our shelves, and when we renovated the first time.

As the kitchen is all white currently (Teapot from Valspar) we knew the wallpaper would work. We cleared the space and took down our shelves, leaving the holes unfilled so the shelves could be put back up. We marked lines on the counter and door frame so we could relocate them once the paper was in place.

We fortunately only needed one extra roll of paper to complete the job (we bought two rolls for the original wall in the nursery) and started on the left hand side of the door. Dann did all the papering. He’s a pretty dab hand at it now as I only seem to be able to pick complex patterns for him to line up, but the impact is so good.

Once all up (took a good three hours – across a nap time and little extra after lunch) we replaced the shelves and I had my fun styling them back up.

As the pattern is quite busy we’re keeping this wall as uncluttered as possible. This particular wall, although in the kitchen, isn’t used for cooking or prep as it’s across from the main kitchen area. The drawers underneath are basically a larder, with a breakfast bar style area at the end.

For peace of mind, we will likely seal the paper on recommendation from a friend who suggested this decorators varnish. It’s used a lot by people to seal wallpaper used in bathrooms so I’m sure it will do the job just fine in the kitchen.

So yes, I’m completely sold on wallpaper in kitchens, especially if you have a large space like we do. Now to decide whether I should replace our kettle and toaster with pink ones! And perhaps just one trip to IKEA for some little snagging bits for the other side of the room, to fully finish it off! An interiors girls work is never done apparently.
