Encouraging kids to spend time in the garden can be something of a challenge these days. After all, they have their iPads, their phones, and their Xboxes, which can make simply spending some time outside seem a lot less appealing. The good news is that with a little magic and a sprinkle of fairy dust you can get the kids to be enthusiastic about spending time outside once more. Keep reading for some suggestions.
Now, I’m not saying that you should chuck the kids out in the garden rain or shine (no matter how much you feel like it! ). However having an area where they can shelter and get cozy is a relatively simple way to add some magic to an outside space.
The good news is that there are several options to consider here from playhouses, to teepees, to treehouses. Even a reading nook complete with bean bags and blankets can provide the perfect sanctuary for your child.
There is no getting away from it, kids love water. That is why they spend most of their time on holiday in the pool or the sea. Of course, another way that you can make your one outdoor space a little more magical is to put it in a swimming pool.
Although, it is worth noting that you’ll need a good pool service to help you keep it clean if you do decide to go down this route. Oh, and it’s pretty important that you invest in a safety cover too, especially if you still have children that are smaller at home.
If a pool won’t fit, think about water play tables, mini pools or a water wall.
To a child, there is nothing more magical than the wonder of nature, and that means the more of it you can encourage in your garden, the better. Happily, it’s not as difficult as it may first seem to create habits that will encourage specific insects, animals, and birds in your back garden.
For example, planting certain types of flowers will attract butterflies, while creating a bug hotel out of an old broken terracotta pot can provide the perfect environment for some creepy crawly friends.
Last of all, a very simple and relatively inexpensive way of making a garden more magical for the kids is to string up some fairy lights. Then all you need to do is wait for the sun to go down and boom, instant atmosphere.
You will want to make sure you choose outdoor safe fairy lights, here. You may even wish to get the kids involved with the selection as they come in a wide range of colors, cool whites, warm whites, and even different shapes like lanterns and dragonflies.
Of course, you absolutely don’t have to draw the line at fairy lights if you don’t want to. Indeed, if you are looking for a little extra magic why don’t you add in extra features like fairy doors and fairy houses as well. Don’t tell the kids you are doing so either, and then watch their delight as they discover them while playing outside!
