Our nursery update | Creating our baby girl’s colour themed nursery

January 16, 2021

When we found out in 2020 that we were expecting a baby girl to add to our family we decided that it was about time we updated our nursery. It has been a nursery for the last 4 years from when it was first decorated four our first boy back in 2016 (you can see my blog post about it here) and hasn’t had much of an update since so it really was about time.

The boys share a bedroom [AD], which we have swapped around so they have our old master bedroom and we now have their fabulous wallpaper mural instead.

I wanted to keep some of the pieces from the original nursery but give it a refresh, rearrange and update ready for our little girl to enjoy for many years to come. I decided I wanted to keep the original orange wall (Sweet Orange from Valspar available at B&Q) but I just don’t like blues for decorating anymore so wanted to lose the turquoise. The white is Teapot, also from Valspar (previously gifted for other painting work) which is a lovely fresh, porcelain white that we use across the house now alongside other colours.

On a complete whim I decided to look for some wallpaper for the room, and fell in love with this flamingo wallpaper. If you’re from my Instagram, you’ll know how much I adore this wallpaper, as I ended up buying another roll and putting it in our kitchen too. My edit makes it darker than it really is, but it’s a lovely pink that isn’t too babyish or pastel and makes a real statement in the room. But this became the start of our pink and orange colour themed nursery. Warm and refreshing without being to obnoxiously girly and babyish.

In this corner I’ve also added this old shelving stand that was in our master bedroom, and then in the boys bedroom, but as the nursery is quite small with limited storage, it felt right to move it here and it fills the gap perfectly.

I updated the artwork in the room to reflect our change in room and decor, adding some old pieces, as well as some new pieces from a mix of our favourite artists

The book/picture shelves are, of course, from Ikea because I am easily influenced by interior trends and I love faffing with these shelves a little bit too much.

The baskets on the malm drawers are from Amazon, and will absolutely be featuring in many Instagram fantasy posts in the future. Currently they play hope to our muslin squares and hair accessories. The doll beside them is my own from when I was a little girl and is one of my favourite items that I get to pass on to my daughter. The marble top is sticky back plastic as the top got a bit destroyed by the hook and loop tape we had on it previously for the changing mat to stay secured. Last and by no means least, the layered rug and wicker chair are Ikea again from previous. They’ve all moved around our house to various locations over the year/s.

I think what I love most about this room is the warm. It’s quite easy to make a pink room feel cold, or overly bright and clashing. It’s also easy to be a bit plain and boring with white too. I feel like this pink and orange colour scheme will transition through many years and grow with our daughter.

We have a few items to add to finish the orange wall, including my plan to create a weave wall hanging. Keep an eye on my instagram for updates.
