When sending out books in the post a lot of people make simple mistakes which ultimately could leave a book damaged. Due to events in 2020, more people are buying books again which means more sellers are sending out books. Whether you’re selling your old books, or you’re a company sending them out- it’s important to remember these tips to help your book delivery get from A to B without being damaged. As well as saving you money on sending out your books.

As an independent children’s book seller, I know all about the struggles of sending out books in the best way. However, these useful tips which I’ve learnt along the way are ideal when it comes to sending out books in the most secure and eco-friendly way. Keep reading to find out more!

Choose the correct packaging

There are plenty of choices of packaging out there, but which is the right choice for sending books? You need to find packaging that is the right size for your book. Putting a book in packaging which is too big, allows for the item to be thrown around during shipping, whereas if you use the right size packaging the item doesn’t have anywhere to move.

Alongside this, using packaging which is secure and protected is also important, people even use paper to send out books in, which although looks nice, when it arrives at the other end, your book may be damaged and result in a refund or another costly send out. Plastic mailers are also a no go, not only are they bad for the environment but they are also not protective and could result in being torn and your book being scratched, getting damp or dirty. So what packaging should you be using?

Using a bookwrap from Lil Packaging is ideal, if you’ve ever ordered a book from Amazon it’s likely that it has come in one of these. It’s plastic-free and comes in a number of sizes to allow the book to fit snug inside of the packaging, it’s protective and limits the amount of damage caused to the spine or any other part of the book.

Lil packaging also offer letterbox friendly packaging, so a delivery can be made with ease without the recipient needing to be in. Of course, this only works if your book is thin enough, however, this works well for plenty of children’s books.

Look for a cost friendly delivery service

Trying to find a delivery courier who is reliable and also cost friendly can feel like a never ending battle. Look into what the courier bases the costs off, whether it’s volume, weight or both, it’s worth working out what will be the most cost effective for your business. By choosing the correct packaging you can allow for a cheaper delivery experience as using the right size packaging can reduce the volume of your package.

Allow for an easier unpackaging experience

Have you ever had a packaging arrive and you spend at least 20 minutes trying to get into it? I know I have, it can be a nightmare. Searching for scissors or something sharp to open the box with is only half of the struggle. When you make it through the masses of packaging on the outside, the dread of what is on the inside awaits. Consider using packaging which is secure but also easy to open, this really does exist.
